OBX Provides a Unique Photography and Vacation Experience

There is something special about Corolla, North Carolina. Maybe it is the sound of the Atlantic rolling onto the beach early in the morning. Maybe it is the sight of a wild horse moving quietly across the dunes. Or perhaps it is the remarkable variety of birds, wildlife, sunsets and ever-changing coastal landscapes that seem to provide a new photograph every time you pick up a camera.

As a photographer and the owner of A Triple Delight, a Carolina Designs vacation home in Corolla, I have had the opportunity to experience this beautiful part of the Outer Banks from two perspectives: as someone who loves photographing nature and as someone who wants visitors to enjoy an exceptional Corolla vacation.

My photography website, Gallery by Michael, is a collection of high-resolution nature and wildlife photographs. I particularly enjoy birds, landscapes and the challenge of capturing those fleeting moments that may last only a few seconds. (Gallery By Michael)

Corolla has become one of my favorite places to photograph.

The Outer Banks is a Photographer’s Playground

Coastal photography is rarely predictable. The same beach can look completely different from one morning to the next. Clouds can transform a sunrise. Wind can reshape the dunes. Reflections appear and disappear with the tide. A quiet stretch of beach can suddenly become filled with shorebirds.

And then there are the wild horses. The Corolla wild horses are one of the area’s most remarkable photographic subjects. Seeing one of these horses in its natural coastal environment is memorable enough. Capturing the right photograph — perhaps a horse standing against the dunes, walking along the shoreline, or simply looking toward the ocean — is something entirely different.

The challenge is not simply pointing a camera at wildlife. It is watching, waiting and being ready. The same is true with coastal birds. Herons, egrets, shorebirds, gulls, terns and birds of prey can all provide opportunities for photographs that range from dramatic action shots to quiet portraits. It might be a bird standing motionless at the edge of the water. A pair of footprints disappearing into wet sand. Sea oats moving in the wind. A wave catching the morning light. Or a sunset that seems to change color every few seconds. These are the images that remind us why we visit the coast in the first place.

Photography That Becomes Part of Your Home

One of the things I enjoy most about photography is that a great photograph does not have to remain on a computer or phone. A beautiful coastal image can become part of the environment in which you live. Large beach photographs can bring the feeling of an Outer Banks vacation into a living room, bedroom or office. Wildlife images can add personality to a space. A dramatic sunset can become a focal point over a fireplace or sofa. A close-up of a shorebird can provide a completely different kind of coastal artwork.

At Gallery by Michael, I offer high-resolution photographs that can be used to create artwork for the home or office. When purchasing an image, customers receive high-resolution files in three aspect ratios, providing flexibility when choosing how they want to display the photograph. (Gallery By Michael)

That flexibility is particularly useful when selecting artwork for your home. A wide panoramic beach scene may work beautifully over a sofa or dining area. A vertical photograph of a bird, horse or lighthouse may be perfect for a hallway or bedroom. A series of related coastal photographs can also create a gallery wall that brings an entire room together. The goal isn’t simply to decorate a room. It is to bring back a feeling.

Why Corolla Is So Photogenic

Corolla offers something that is increasingly difficult to find in many beach destinations: an opportunity to experience the coast without feeling like everything has been built around you. The area combines wide Atlantic beaches, dunes, wildlife, maritime landscapes and the unique character of the northern Outer Banks. Corolla also provides access to the Currituck Sound and the historic areas around the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Whalehead. (Carolina Designs Realty)

For photographers, that variety means there is always another possibility. Early morning might mean photographing shorebirds along the beach. Later in the day, you might look for wildlife or explore another part of the Outer Banks. And evening brings another favorite photographic opportunity: sunset. One of the great things about coastal photography is that you don’t necessarily have to travel far to find something worth photographing. Sometimes you simply need to walk outside.

A Vacation at A Triple Delight

That is one reason I particularly enjoy A Triple Delight, my Carolina Designs vacation home in Ocean Sands. The home is approximately 125 yards from the beach access, making it easy for guests to walk to the beach for an early-morning photography excursion, a daytime walk or an evening sunset. (Carolina Designs Realty) A Triple Delight has approximately 1,400 square feet of covered and open decks, with some offering ocean views. The home’s third-level crow’s nest provides an elevated perspective over the surrounding area and toward the ocean. (Carolina Designs Realty)

For me, that makes the house more than simply a place to sleep between beach outings. It becomes part of the experience. Imagine starting the morning with coffee, camera in hand, walking down to the beach while the light is still soft. Spend some time photographing birds and the shoreline, return to the house for breakfast, and later head out in search of the wild horses or another coastal subject. Then, in the evening, return to A Triple Delight, relax by the pool or hot tub, and review the day’s photographs. That is a very different kind of beach vacation. It is a vacation where the landscape becomes part of your memories — and potentially part of your home when you return.

Take the Outer Banks Home With You

A photograph of a wild horse can take you back to the moment you first saw it.

A beach photograph can remind you of an early morning when the family was together.

A sunset can bring back the feeling of sitting on the deck after a long day at the beach.

That is why I believe coastal photography works so well as home artwork. The photograph becomes more than an image. It becomes a memory.

Whether you are visiting Corolla for the first time or returning for your tenth family vacation, I encourage you to take some time to look beyond the obvious. Watch the birds. Look at the changing light. Walk the beach early in the morning. Explore the dunes. Keep an eye out for wildlife. And don’t forget your camera. You never know what will be around the next corner.
